OCTOBER’S THEME — “SEEING HOLINESS FROM GOD’S PERSPECTIVE”
BEATS FROM YOUR PASTOR’S HEART
LET HIS LIFE SHAPE YOUR RESPONSE
LEARNING TO RESPOND THROUGH CHRIST INSTEAD OF REACTING THROUGH THE FLESH
GALATIANS 2:20, “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me.”
YOUR REACTIONS REVEAL WHO IS IN CONTROL
One of the greatest tests of the Christian life is not how we behave when everything is going well, but how we respond when things go wrong. Someone speaks unkindly, interrupts our plans, criticizes our efforts, or treats us unfairly. Suddenly, our natural feelings take over, and we react in ways that do not reflect Jesus Christ. But here is the wonderful truth of the Exchanged Life: We do not have to allow our natural reactions to control our responses. Because Christ lives within us, we can depend upon Him to express His patience, wisdom, and love through us. The Christian life is not simply asking, “What would Jesus do?” It is learning to say, “Lord Jesus, live Your life through me in this very moment.”
RECOGNIZE WHEN YOUR FLESH WANTS CONTROL
James 1:19 — “Let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath.”
Our greatest spiritual battles often begin before we ever speak a word. Someone disappoints us, and resentment begins growing. Someone criticizes us, and we immediately want to defend ourselves. Someone interrupts our plans, and irritation takes control. These reactions reveal how quickly we can return to depending upon ourselves rather than Christ. The first step is recognizing what is happening within us. Instead of immediately reacting, pause and acknowledge your feelings before the Lord. You cannot surrender a reaction you refuse to recognize. Simply pray, “Lord, I feel hurt and angry, but I do not want these feelings to control my response. I surrender them to You.” That brief moment of dependence can change the direction of an entire conversation.
DEPEND UPON CHRIST FOR WHAT YOU CANNOT PRODUCE
Philippians 4:13 — “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”
Perhaps someone has spoken harshly to you, and everything within you wants to respond the same way. You know you should demonstrate patience, but you do not feel patient. This is where the Exchanged Life becomes practical. Instead of trying harder to manufacture patience, consciously depend upon the patience of Christ who lives within you. Pray, “Lord Jesus, I cannot respond correctly through my own strength. I need Your love to govern my attitude and Your wisdom to guide my words.” Then choose to obey Him, trusting His Spirit to strengthen you. The Exchanged Life does not mean we never experience anger, hurt, or frustration. It means those feelings no longer have to determine how we respond. Christ becomes our source of strength rather than our emotions becoming our master.
LET OTHERS EXPERIENCE THE JESUS WHO LIVES WITHIN YOU
Colossians 3:12 — “Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering.”
The purpose of the Exchanged Life is not merely that we feel more peaceful inside. It is that the character of Jesus becomes visible in the way we treat others. His love can be expressed through our kindness, His patience through our restraint, and His wisdom through our words. Think about the people you will encounter today. Someone may need encouragement rather than criticism. Someone may need understanding rather than an argument. Someone may need loving correction rather than harsh condemnation. The person standing before you may never read Galatians 2:20, but they should be able to see its truth demonstrated through your life. Christ living within us should make a noticeable difference in how others experience us.
Imagine a beautiful window with sunlight shining against it. When the glass is clean, the light fills the room. But when dirt covers the glass, the light is obstructed. The problem is not that the sun has lost its brightness. The problem is that something is preventing the light from shining through clearly. Our lives can be like that window. Jesus Christ is the light, but pride, resentment, selfishness, and uncontrolled reactions can obscure His character in our conduct. As we confess our sin and surrender our attitudes to Him, others can see His love more clearly. The goal of the Christian life is not to convince others how wonderful we are, but to allow them to see how wonderful Jesus is through us.
LET JESUS ANSWER THROUGH YOU
Today, you will probably encounter someone or something that tests your patience. When that moment comes, remember that you have a choice. You can respond through your natural feelings, or you can depend upon the Christ who lives within you. The greatest evidence of the Exchanged Life is not how loudly we profess that Christ lives in us, but how clearly His character is expressed through our everyday responses. Before you respond, remember: “NOT I, BUT CHRIST!”
WARFARE PRAYER — LORD, TAKE CONTROL OF MY RESPONSES
Heavenly Father, thank You that Jesus Christ lives within me through His Spirit. Forgive me for the times I have allowed anger, pride, hurt feelings, and selfishness to control my reactions. In the mighty name of Jesus, I resist every temptation of the enemy to respond with bitterness, retaliation, or unforgiveness. Lord Jesus, I surrender my thoughts, emotions, words, and attitudes to Your authority. When someone hurts me, express Your love through me. When I am criticized, give me humility and wisdom. When I am frustrated, supply Your patience. May others see less of my selfishness and more of Your character in everything I say and do. Not I, but Christ living through me! In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.
DAILY CHALLENGE — PRACTICE THE CHRIST-CONTROLLED RESPONSE
Today, when someone irritates, disappoints, or challenges you, pause before responding. Silently pray, “Lord Jesus, I surrender my reaction to You. Help me respond as You would have me respond.” Then deliberately choose words and actions that reflect His character. At the end of the day, ask yourself whether others were able to see the love and patience of Christ through your responses.
REMEMBER: YOU CANNOT ALWAYS CONTROL HOW OTHERS TREAT YOU, BUT THROUGH THE INDWELLING CHRIST, YOU CAN CHOOSE HOW YOU RESPOND TO THEM.
