Experiencing Christ Living His Life Through You
GALATIANS 2:20, “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.”
YOU WERE NEVER MEANT TO LIVE THE CHRISTIAN LIFE IN YOUR OWN STRENGTH
Have you ever started your day determined to be more patient, more loving, less worried, and more like Jesus, only to discover that before the day was over, you had failed again? Someone irritated you, an unexpected problem caused anxiety, or you responded in a way you later regretted. You wanted to do better, but your own strength was not enough. Here is the wonderful truth: Jesus never intended for you to live the Christian life through your own strength. He intended to live His life through you. This is the meaning of the Exchanged Life. It is learning to exchange self-reliance for complete dependence upon the Christ who lives within us. The Christian life is not simply living FOR Christ; it is learning to live FROM Christ.
ADMIT THAT YOUR STRENGTH IS NOT ENOUGH
John 15:5 — “For without me ye can do nothing.”
The first step toward experiencing the Exchanged Life is recognizing that we cannot produce the life of Christ through determination alone. We cannot manufacture genuine love, lasting peace, or spiritual patience simply by trying harder. These qualities are the fruit of the Holy Spirit working within us. God does not ask us to produce what only Christ can supply. He asks us to remain dependent upon Him.Suppose someone speaks harshly to you today. Your natural reaction may be anger, resentment, or the desire to defend yourself. Instead of immediately responding, silently pray, “Lord Jesus, I cannot handle this situation properly without You. I surrender my reaction to You. Please express Your patience and wisdom through me.” Then respond in obedience to His Word. You are still making the decision to obey, but you are depending upon Christ for the strength to do so.
LET CHRIST BE YOUR SOURCE, NOT JUST YOUR EXAMPLE
Philippians 4:13 — “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”
Many Christians spend their lives trying to imitate Jesus without consciously depending upon the life of Jesus within them. We know how Jesus would respond, but we struggle to respond that way ourselves. The Exchanged Life teaches us that Christ is more than our example. He is our indwelling source of strength, wisdom, love, and grace.Imagine receiving an unkind message from someone you love. Your first impulse may be to answer with equally hurtful words. But instead of allowing your emotions to control your response, stop and acknowledge Christ’s presence within you. Pray, “Lord, my feelings are hurt, and I want to defend myself. But I belong to You. Help me respond with Your love and wisdom.” This does not mean ignoring wrong behavior. It means allowing Christ to govern your attitude while you respond truthfully and lovingly. The Exchanged Life is not the absence of difficult circumstances; it is the presence of Christ supplying what we need within them.
PRACTICE DEPENDENCE THROUGHOUT YOUR DAY
2 Corinthians 3:5 — “Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God.”
Experiencing the Exchanged Life is not something reserved for Sunday worship or morning devotions. It is learning to depend upon Christ throughout the ordinary moments of every day. When you wake up, acknowledge that you need His strength. When you face a difficult conversation, depend upon His wisdom. When you become weary, trust His sustaining grace. When you are disappointed, rest in His faithfulness. And when you fail, confess your failure, receive His forgiveness, and return to dependence upon Him. Spiritual maturity is not reaching the place where you no longer need Jesus. It is becoming increasingly aware that you need Him every moment. The more we recognize our dependence upon Christ, the more His character can be expressed through our words, attitudes, and decisions. We are not trying to become independent, successful Christians. We are learning to become surrendered, dependent followers of Jesus.
Imagine an empty glove lying on a table. Tell that glove to pick up a Bible, write a letter, or perform some useful task. It cannot accomplish anything by itself. You could give it instructions all day long, but nothing would happen. However, when you place your hand inside the glove, something changes. The glove can now accomplish what it could never do alone. The glove has not become stronger; it is being supplied by the strength of the hand within it. That simple illustration helps us understand the Exchanged Life. We were never designed to produce the life of Jesus independently of Jesus. Christ lives within us through His Spirit, and as we surrender to Him, trust Him, and obey His Word, His life is expressed through ours. We still make decisions and take responsibility, but we are no longer depending upon ourselves as our source. The secret is not becoming strong enough to live without Jesus. It is recognizing that without Him we can do nothing of eternal value.
LET JESUS LIVE THROUGH YOU TODAY
Today, stop measuring your spiritual life merely by how hard you are trying. Instead, ask yourself how much you are depending upon Christ. You do not need to wait until you become stronger, wiser, or more spiritual to experience the Exchanged Life. The Christ who saved you is the Christ who lives within you, and His grace is sufficient for whatever you face today. Jesus is not merely waiting for you to succeed in living the Christian life. He is present within you to supply the strength you need to live it. When you face something beyond your ability, remember Paul’s wonderful declaration: “Nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me.” That is the secret of the supplied life.
WARFARE PRAYER — LORD, LIVE YOUR LIFE THROUGH ME
Heavenly Father, I come before You recognizing that I cannot live the Christian life through my own strength. Forgive me for depending upon determination instead of the indwelling life of Jesus Christ. In the mighty name of Jesus, I reject every lie of the enemy that tells me I must face life’s battles alone or that my failures have placed me beyond Your grace. Deliver me from pride, self-reliance, fear, and discouragement. Lord Jesus, I surrender my thoughts, words, attitudes, and decisions to Your Lordship. When I am tempted to become angry, express Your patience through me. When I am afraid, strengthen me with Your peace. When I feel inadequate, remind me that my sufficiency is in You. Teach me to stop struggling independently and begin living in complete dependence upon Your life within me. Not I, but Christ! In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.
DAILY CHALLENGE — PRACTICE THE THREE-SECOND SURRENDER
Today, whenever you face a difficult person, an unexpected problem, or an uncomfortable emotion, stop before reacting and recognize what is happening in your heart. Silently pray, “Lord Jesus, I cannot handle this properly without You. I surrender this moment to You.” Then consciously depend upon His strength and take the next obedient step. Practice this throughout your day until dependence upon Christ begins replacing the habit of depending upon yourself.
REMEMBER: THE EXCHANGED LIFE IS NOT YOU TRYING HARDER TO LIVE LIKE JESUS. IT IS YOU TRUSTING THE JESUS WHO LIVES WITHIN YOU TO EXPRESS HIS LIFE THROUGH YOU.
