Psalm 18:33 — “He maketh my feet like hinds’ feet, and setteth me upon my high places.”

A hind is a deer known for its ability to climb steep, dangerous mountain terrain with balance, strength, and confidence. Where other animals would slip, stumble, or fall, the hind can stand securely even in difficult places. David used this picture to describe what God does for His children. Life often leads us into steep places—places of pressure, uncertainty, spiritual warfare, heartbreak, responsibility, and exhaustion. There are seasons where the climb feels too difficult and the terrain too dangerous. Yet David declared that God gives supernatural footing for difficult paths. God does not always remove the mountain, but He strengthens the believer to stand securely upon it.

Many people pray for easier circumstances while God is often working to produce stronger faith. The Lord knows the paths His children must walk, and He equips them accordingly. What feels impossible in your own strength becomes possible through His grace. There are seasons when you wonder how you will keep going emotionally, spiritually, financially, or physically. Yet somehow God continues giving strength one step at a time. The hind does not panic because of the height of the mountain. Its footing was designed for the terrain. Likewise, God prepares His people for places they never imagined they could survive. The trial that should have destroyed you instead became the place where you discovered God’s sustaining power.

Spiritual instability causes many believers to constantly live in fear, confusion, discouragement, and defeat. Difficult circumstances reveal where our footing truly is. When life shakes you, it exposes what you are standing upon. The hind survives because it knows where to place its feet. Spiritually, believers must learn careful footing through prayer, obedience, worship, and the Word of God. One careless step spiritually can lead to compromise, bitterness, or discouragement. God often uses difficult seasons to teach spiritual balance. He teaches us not to lean upon emotions, people, or circumstances, but upon Him alone. The higher the mountain, the more dependent the hind becomes upon secure footing. Some of the strongest believers are not those who avoided hardship, but those who learned how to stand securely with God in the middle of hardship.

The “high places” David spoke of were not merely places of success, but places of victory, perspective, and nearness to God. Mountains allow you to see differently. What once looked overwhelming from the valley begins to look smaller from above. God sometimes allows hard climbs because higher places reveal deeper truths about Him. In valleys, we often learn dependence. On high places, we often learn vision. The enemy wants you to quit during the climb. He whispers that the pressure is too great and the path too steep. But God sees what you cannot yet see. Every difficult step is preparing you for greater spiritual stability, greater maturity, and greater dependence upon Him.

Mountain climbers wear specialized shoes because ordinary shoes cannot grip dangerous terrain safely. Without proper footing, one slip can become deadly. Spiritually, many believers try to climb difficult mountains with worldly thinking, fleshly reactions, and prayerless living. Then they wonder why they constantly slip emotionally and spiritually. But God gives “hinds’ feet” to those who depend upon Him. He develops spiritual footing that can endure steep places without collapsing.

The mountain you are climbing today may feel overwhelming, but God has not abandoned you on the slope. The same God who called you upward will strengthen your footing along the way. He sees every dangerous ledge, every hidden obstacle, and every exhausting climb. Trust Him. He is able to steady your feet where others would fall. The difficult place you fear today may become the very place where you discover the strength and faithfulness of God more deeply than ever before.

Father, when life feels steep and unstable, remind me that You are strengthening my feet for this climb. Keep me from slipping into fear, discouragement, bitterness, or unbelief. Teach me to walk carefully and depend fully upon You. Help me stand securely in difficult places and trust You through every steep season of life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Identify one “mountain” you are currently facing. Instead of focusing on how steep the climb feels, thank God specifically for the strength He is developing in you through it. Spend time today standing firmly in prayer and worship instead of giving place to fear or discouragement.
