OCTOBER’S THEME — “SEEING HOLINESS FROM GOD’S PERSPECTIVE”
BEATS FROM YOUR PASTOR’S HEART
GOD IS STILL YOUR SHEPHERD TODAY
“The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.” — Psalm 23:1
Yesterday, we remembered who our Shepherd is. Today, I want us to linger over one small but powerful word in David’s beautiful declaration: “IS.” David did not say, “The LORD was my shepherd,” as though God’s care belonged only to the past. Neither did he say, “The LORD will be my shepherd,” as though he had to wait until tomorrow to experience His faithfulness. David declared with confidence, “The LORD IS my shepherd.” His testimony was not merely a memory of yesterday or a hope for tomorrow. It was a present reality upon which he could rest his soul. How often do we find ourselves talking more confidently about what God did years ago than about what He is doing in our lives today? We remember the prayers He answered, the burdens He carried, the doors He opened, and the strength He supplied when we thought we could not take another step. We can recount His faithfulness in yesterday’s battles, yet when a new difficulty appears, we sometimes find ourselves wondering whether we will have the strength to face it. But here is a truth I want you to carry in your heart today: THE GOD WHO WAS FAITHFUL TO YOU YESTERDAY HAS NOT CEASED TO BE YOUR SHEPHERD TODAY! The Shepherd who walked with you through yesterday’s valley has not abandoned you at the entrance to today’s uncertainty. His presence has not diminished, His compassion has not weakened, and His promises have not expired. Whatever this morning has brought into your life, you are not facing it without the One who knows every detail of your journey. Your Shepherd is still with you, and His care reaches into this very moment.
HIS FAITHFULNESS CONTINUES WHEN YOUR FEELINGS CHANGE
There are mornings when faith seems to rise effortlessly within us. Prayer comes naturally, the Scriptures warm our hearts, and gratitude fills our thoughts. We sense the nearness of God, and trusting Him seems almost as natural as breathing. But there are other mornings when everything feels different. Our bodies are tired, our minds are troubled, our hearts are heavy, and even the familiar promises of Scripture seem difficult to embrace. We know what God has said, but our emotions struggle to find rest in what we know to be true. It is in those moments that we must remember an important distinction: OUR FEELINGS MAY CHANGE, BUT THE FAITHFULNESS OF GOD NEVER DOES. Our emotions describe what we are experiencing, but they do not determine who God is. The presence of fear does not mean the absence of faith. The presence of sorrow does not mean the absence of the Shepherd. Even when we cannot feel His nearness, we can still trust the certainty of His Word. David’s declaration, “The LORD is my shepherd,” is especially precious when spoken through tears. You can whisper those words beside a hospital bed, pray them while waiting for an answer, or hold tightly to them when your strength seems almost gone. You do not have to manufacture a feeling of spiritual victory before coming into His presence. You can simply say, “Father, my heart is troubled today. I know You are faithful, but I need Your help to rest in that truth.” Sometimes the most meaningful expression of faith is not a triumphant shout but a trembling voice that still turns toward God. Your Shepherd does not withdraw His care because you are struggling. He invites you to come to Him with your weariness, your questions, and your weakness. Keep returning to His Word, keep talking to Him in prayer, and keep taking the next step of obedience. YOUR SHEPHERD REMAINS STEADFAST EVEN WHEN YOUR HEART FEELS UNSTEADY.
YESTERDAY’S MERCIES TEACH YOU TO TRUST HIM WITH TODAY’S NEED
Take a moment and look back over the road you have traveled. Think about the valleys you never expected to enter, the burdens you thought would crush you, the losses you wondered how you could survive, and the responsibilities for which you felt completely inadequate. There were moments when you could not imagine how you would make it through another day. Yet, by the sustaining grace of God, here you are. You have come through experiences you once feared you could never endure. Perhaps some prayers were answered differently from what you had hoped. Perhaps some wounds still hurt, and perhaps some questions remain unanswered. Nevertheless, as you look back, you can recognize the mercies of God along the way. He strengthened you through His Word, sustained you through prayer, encouraged you through His people, and supplied grace for circumstances that seemed beyond your ability to bear. Jeremiah declared in Lamentations 3:22–23, “It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.” What makes these words especially meaningful is that they were spoken in the midst of sorrow. Jeremiah was not celebrating a life free from trouble. He was recognizing the unfailing character of God while surrounded by suffering. What a wonderful reminder that God’s mercies are not exhausted by yesterday’s needs! The grace He supplied yesterday does not leave Him with less grace for today. His compassion does not grow weary, and His faithfulness does not diminish with the passing of time. Every new morning brings another opportunity to depend upon the inexhaustible goodness of our heavenly Father. Beloved, the difficulty you are facing today may be something you have never encountered before, but YOU ARE NOT FACING IT WITH A GOD YOU HAVE NEVER KNOWN! Your circumstances may be unfamiliar, but His character remains unchanged. The same Shepherd who sustained you through yesterday’s trials is worthy of your confidence in today’s uncertainties. Let yesterday’s mercies become reminders that encourage today’s faith. Thank Him for the ways He has carried you, and then place the present burden into His capable hands. The God who has brought you this far has not finished being faithful to you.
HIS PRESENT CARE INVITES YOUR PRESENT OBEDIENCE
One of the enemy’s subtle strategies is to keep our minds so occupied with yesterday’s regrets or tomorrow’s fears that we overlook what God is asking of us today. We rehearse conversations we cannot change, revisit decisions we wish we had made differently, and worry about possibilities that may never become realities. Meanwhile, the present day passes before us, filled with opportunities to trust, obey, serve, encourage, and glorify the Lord. Your Shepherd has not asked you to carry the responsibilities of your entire future in one day. He has called you to follow Him faithfully in the moment He has placed before you. You may not know what the next year will bring, but you can speak graciously in your next conversation. You may not know how a difficult situation will end, but you can pray faithfully, act with integrity, and seek His wisdom today. You may not possess the physical strength you once enjoyed, but you can still surrender to Him the strength you have. Jesus taught His disciples to pray, “Give us this day our daily bread” (Matthew 6:11). He was teaching us the beauty of daily dependence. We are not called to live today on tomorrow’s imagined strength or to borrow tomorrow’s troubles. We are invited to receive today’s provision from the hand of a faithful Father and trust Him again when tomorrow arrives. Following Christ becomes meaningful through the ordinary choices of everyday life. A kind word, a forgiving spirit, a quiet act of service, an honest conversation, or a moment spent encouraging someone who is struggling can all become expressions of obedience to our Shepherd. Holiness is not merely something we admire in the character of God; it is something that should increasingly shape the way we respond to Him in the circumstances of daily life. Instead of asking, “Lord, how am I going to handle everything that may happen?” begin asking, “LORD, WHAT DOES FAITHFULNESS LOOK LIKE FOR ME TODAY?” Then listen to His Word and respond to what He has made clear. You do not need to know every turn in the road to take the next step with your Shepherd.
Imagine a loving father sitting beside the bed of his sick little girl through a long and difficult night. The room is quiet, except for the gentle sounds of her breathing. Occasionally, she awakens, frightened and uncomfortable. Through sleepy eyes, she looks toward the chair beside her bed and sees her father watching over her. His presence brings reassurance, and she closes her eyes again, resting in the knowledge that she is not alone. As the hours pass, she drifts in and out of sleep. Sometimes she is aware of his presence, and sometimes she is not. During those hours when she cannot see him or hear his voice, nothing has changed about his love or his attentiveness. He remains beside her, watching, waiting, and ready to respond to her needs. Her awareness of her father’s presence changes throughout the night, BUT HIS FAITHFUL CARENEVER CEASES. What a beautiful picture of the Lord’s care for His children! There are seasons when we sense His presence so deeply that our hearts overflow with gratitude. There are other seasons when pain, grief, uncertainty, or exhaustion seem to cloud our awareness of His nearness. Yet His faithfulness is not dependent upon our ability to perceive it. Psalm 121:4 reminds us, “Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.” Our earthly bodies grow tired, our emotions fluctuate, and our understanding is limited, but our heavenly Shepherd never grows weary in His watchful care. JUST BECAUSE YOU CANNOT ALWAYS SENSE HIS PRESENCE DOES NOT MEAN YOU HAVE EVER BEEN OUTSIDE HIS CARE. HE IS STILL YOUR SHEPHERD
As you begin this day, I want you to take the opening words of Psalm 23 and make them personal once again: “THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD.” Do not hurry past those words. Let them settle deeply into your heart. The Lord knows the burden you carried into this morning. He knows the concerns you have not shared with anyone else. He knows the weakness you are experiencing, the questions for which you have no answers, and the responsibilities awaiting your attention. He also knows the grace you need, the wisdom your circumstances require, and the strength necessary for the next step. You do not have to see the entire road before you can trust the One who is leading you. You do not have to understand everything He permits before you can rest in everything His Word reveals about His character. Remember yesterday’s mercies, bring Him today’s concerns, and follow Him in today’s opportunities. The Shepherd who led you through yesterday’s difficulties has not surrendered His care over your life. HE WAS YOUR SHEPHERD YESTERDAY. HE IS YOUR SHEPHERD TODAY. AND HE WILL STILL BE YOUR SHEPHERD WHEN TOMORROW COMES.
WARFARE PRAYER — LORD, HELP ME REST IN YOUR FAITHFULNESS TODAY
Heavenly Father, I come before You this morning with a grateful heart, thanking You that Your faithfulness has never depended upon my feelings, my circumstances, or my ability to understand everything You are doing. You have carried me through valleys I never expected to enter, sustained me through burdens I thought I could never bear, and surrounded me with mercies I could never deserve. Today, I acknowledge once again that You are my Shepherd, and I belong to You. In the mighty name of Jesus Christ, I stand against every lie of the enemy that would cause me to doubt Your goodness, question Your faithfulness, or believe that You have forgotten me. I reject the spirit of fear that attempts to control my thoughts, the discouragement that seeks to weaken my confidence, and the unbelief that whispers that today’s problems are somehow greater than Your ability to sustain me. Bring every anxious thought into submission to the truth of Your Word. Father, forgive me for the times I have allowed yesterday’s disappointments to steal today’s joy or tomorrow’s uncertainties to rob me of today’s peace. Remind me that Your mercies are new every morning and that Your compassions never fail. Strengthen my heart to trust You when I cannot trace Your hand, and help me to remain obedient when I cannot understand Your plan. Lord Jesus, guard my mind, guide my steps, govern my responses, and give me a heart that remains sensitive to Your leading. May I never become so overwhelmed by what I am facing that I forget Who is walking with me. Teach me to recognize Your faithfulness in the ordinary moments of this day and to respond with gratitude, humility, courage, and obedience. YOU ARE MY SHEPHERD TODAY, AND I PLACE MY LIFE, MY FAMILY, MY BURDENS, AND MY FUTURE INTO YOUR FAITHFUL HANDS.In the precious, powerful, and victorious name of Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.
DAILY CHALLENGE — REMEMBER, RELEASE, AND RESPOND
Before this day is over, take a few quiet moments to remember one particular season when God faithfully carried you through a difficult experience. Write down what happened and how the Lord sustained you. Then identify the greatest concern weighing upon your heart today and deliberately surrender it to Him in prayer. Say aloud, “LORD, YOU WERE FAITHFUL THEN, AND YOU ARE FAITHFUL NOW. HELP ME FOLLOW YOU TODAY.” Finally, choose one practical act of obedience that reflects your confidence in His care. It may be encouraging someone, extending forgiveness, making a difficult but necessary decision, or simply refusing to allow fear to govern your thoughts. REMEMBER: YOU ARE NOT WALKING INTO THIS DAY LOOKING FOR A SHEPHERD. YOU ARE WALKING INTO THIS DAY WITH THE SHEPHERD WHO HAS NEVER LEFT YOU!
