BEATS FROM YOUR PASTOR’S HEART’S

WHEN MY HEART IS OVERWHELMED — LEAD ME TO THE ROCK

“From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.” — Psalm 61:2

Yesterday the question was, “Why art thou cast down, O my soul?” The answer was, “Hope thou in God.” But what happens when you have preached truth to yourself, reminded yourself of God’s faithfulness, tried to steady your thoughts—and your heart still feels overwhelmed? David gives us the next step: “When my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.” Notice that David did not say, “If my heart is overwhelmed.” He said, “When.” There will be moments when life becomes bigger than your present strength. There will be burdens you cannot reason away, problems you cannot immediately solve, and emotions you cannot simply command to disappear. Faith does not mean you will never become overwhelmed. Faith means you know where to go when you are. Sometimes God does not immediately change what is overwhelming you. Instead, He brings you to a place higher than what is overwhelming you.

YOU CAN BE OVERWHELMED WITHOUT BEING OVERCOME

There is a difference between being overwhelmed and being overcome. To be overwhelmed means the burden has exceeded your present emotional strength. To be overcome means you have surrendered to it. David admitted, “My heart is overwhelmed.” There was no pretending. No religious mask. No attempt to appear stronger than he was. He cried unto God. Sometimes the most spiritual thing you can say is, “Lord, this is more than I can handle.” We have sometimes treated those words as an admission of weak faith. They can actually be the beginning of deeper faith. As long as I believe I can carry everything myself, I will keep depending upon myself. But when I finally reach the end of my strength, I discover the sufficiency of His. Paul learned this when the Lord told him, “My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9). You may be overwhelmed by grief, but grief does not have to overcome you. You may be overwhelmed by uncertainty, but uncertainty does not have to overcome you. You may be overwhelmed by responsibilities, disappointment, family problems, financial pressures, unanswered prayer, or a future you cannot see. The waves may be over your head, but they are still under His feet.

STOP TRYING TO BE YOUR OWN ROCK

David prayed something very revealing: “Lead me.” He realized he could not get himself where he needed to be. When our hearts become overwhelmed, our instinct is often to try harder. We think more. Analyze more. Worry more. Replay conversations. Imagine possibilities. Search for answers. Try to control outcomes. We exhaust ourselves attempting to create security. But David did not pray, “Lord, help me become stronger.” He prayed, “Lead me to the Rock.” Some burdens are permitted to become heavier than you so that you will finally stop trying to be strong enough to carry them. God never intended for you to be your own refuge. You cannot be your own rock because eventually your strength changes. Your emotions change. Your health changes. Your circumstances change. People change. Finances change. Plans change. But Jesus Christ is “the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever” (Hebrews 13:8). When everything underneath you feels unstable, do not look for something inside yourself that cannot move. Look to Someone above yourself Who cannot be moved.

THE ROCK IS HIGHER THAN I

David did not merely ask for a rock. He asked for “the rock that is higher than I.” That phrase is important because when my heart is overwhelmed, I need something beyond myself. I need wisdom higher than my wisdom. Strength greater than my strength. Peace deeper than my understanding. Grace greater than my weakness. A perspective higher than what I can presently see. God sees what you cannot see. You see today. God sees tomorrow. You see the diagnosis. God sees the entire journey. You see the closed door. God knows what is behind it. You see what did not happen. God knows what He prevented. You see the delay. God sees His appointed time. You see one piece of the puzzle. God already sees the completed picture. This is why Proverbs 3:5 says, “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.” Your understanding is too low to carry you through some valleys. You need the Rock that is higher than you. There comes a moment when faith must say: “I DON’T UNDERSTAND THIS—BUT I DON’T HAVE TO UNDERSTAND EVERYTHING TO TRUST THE ONE WHO DOES.”

SOMETIMES GOD CHANGES YOUR POSITION BEFORE HE CHANGES YOUR PROBLEM

Imagine standing at the bottom of a mountain during a violent storm. The rain is falling, the wind is blowing, and all you can see are the rocks, trees, and darkness immediately surrounding you. From where you stand, there appears to be no way forward. Then someone takes you higher. The storm may still be there. The valley has not disappeared. The circumstances beneath you have not necessarily changed. But your perspective has. From the higher place you can see beyond what you could see below. That is what happens when God leads an overwhelmed heart to the Rock. Prayer may not immediately remove the problem—but it brings you higher. Worship may not immediately change the diagnosis—but it brings you higher. Scripture may not immediately open the door—but it brings you higher. The presence of God may not immediately answer every question—but it brings you higher. And from the Rock, you begin to see your problem differently. The problem that looked enormous from the valley looks very different when viewed from the presence of God.

YOU DON’T HAVE TO KNOW THE WAY WHEN YOU KNOW THE GUIDE

David said, “Lead me.” That means there are seasons when you do not know what to do next. And that is all right. You do not need tomorrow’s directions today. You need today’s Shepherd. Sometimes we are asking God to show us the entire road when He is only asking us to take His hand. We want explanations. God offers His presence. We want a map. God says, “Follow Me.” We want to know how everything will work out. God says, “Trust Me.” There are places God will lead you that you could never find by yourself. There are depths of His grace you discover only when your own strength has failed. There are dimensions of His peace you experience only when circumstances give you every reason not to have peace. The overwhelmed heart says, “I cannot do this.” Faith answers, “Then I will stop trying to do it without Him.”

CRY UPWARD

Yesterday you spoke to your soul: “Why art thou cast down?” Today, speak to your God: “Lead me to the Rock.” When you cannot think your way through it—cry upward. When you cannot fix it—cry upward. When you cannot understand it—cry upward. When you cannot carry it another step—cry upward. When you do not know what tomorrow holds—cry upward. Your overwhelmed heart does not need another place to hide. It needs a higher place to stand. And there is a Rock. Jesus is higher than your fear. Higher than your disappointment. Higher than your grief. Higher than your diagnosis.
Higher than your unanswered questions. Higher than your past. Higher than what you are facing today. And already standing in your tomorrow. You may say, “Lord, I cannot see my way.” That is when you pray: “THEN LEAD ME.” You may say, “Lord, I cannot carry this.” Then hear Him say: “YOU WERE NEVER SUPPOSED TO CARRY IT ALONE.” Your heart may be overwhelmed today. BUT YOUR GOD IS NOT. The situation may be over your head—BUT IT IS STILL UNDER HIS FEET. “WHEN MY HEART IS OVERWHELMED: LEAD ME TO THE ROCK THAT IS HIGHER THAN I.”

WARFARE PRAYER

Father, in the mighty name of Jesus, my heart is overwhelmed, but I refuse to allow what overwhelms me to overcome me. I confess that I have tried to carry things You never asked me to carry alone. I surrender my fear, my unanswered questions, my disappointment, my uncertainty, and everything I cannot control. Lead me to the Rock that is higher than I. Lift my thoughts above my circumstances. Lift my faith above my feelings. Lift my eyes above what I can see and fix them upon Jesus. I renounce every lie of the enemy that says there is no way forward. You already know the way. You are already in my tomorrow. Your grace is sufficient, Your strength is perfect in my weakness, and Your presence is greater than everything surrounding me. I may be overwhelmed, but I will not be overcome. Lead me, hold me, strengthen me, and plant my feet upon the Rock. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

DAILY CHALLENGE — STOP CARRYING IT AND START CLIMBING

Identify the one thing that is overwhelming your heart most today. Do not spend the entire day rehearsing it, analyzing it, or trying to control it. Every time it returns to your mind, turn it into this prayer: “LORD, THIS IS BIGGER THAN ME—SO LEAD ME TO THE ROCK THAT IS HIGHER THAN I.” Then deliberately turn your attention from the size of your burden to the greatness of your God. Yesterday you told your soul, “Hope thou in God.” Today tell your overwhelmed heart: “I DON’T HAVE TO BE STRONG ENOUGH FOR THIS. I JUST HAVE TO STAY CLOSE ENOUGH TO HIM.”
