NOVEMBER’S THEME — “SEEING THANKSGIVING FROM GOD’S PERSPECTIVE”

BEATS FROM YOUR PASTOR’S HEART

YOU ARE UNITED WITH CHRIST

The Christian life is not merely living for Christ. It is Christ living His life through you.

Galatians 2:20, “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.”

THE SECRET MANY CHRISTIANS HAVE NEVER DISCOVERED

One of the greatest discoveries a Christian can make is that the Christian life is not something we produce for God, but something Christ produces through us. Many sincere believers spend years trying harder, praying for more strength, making promises, and struggling to become what God wants them to be. Yet they continually discover that determination alone cannot produce spiritual victory. The wonderful truth is that God never intended for us to live the Christian life independently of Him. When we received Jesus Christ as our Saviour, we received more than forgiveness and the promise of heaven. We received His indwelling presence! The secret of the Christian life is not a stronger you, but a surrendered you through whom Christ can live.

YOU ARE CONNECTED TO THE ONE WHO GIVES YOU LIFE

Jesus declared in John 15:5, “I am the vine, ye are the branches.” Think about that beautiful relationship. A branch does not struggle to manufacture fruit. It simply remains connected to the vine, receiving the life and nourishment necessary to produce fruit. The same principle applies to our spiritual lives. We cannot manufacture genuine love, patience, peace, forgiveness, or spiritual strength through human determination. These qualities are produced as we abide in Christ and yield to the Holy Spirit. Sometimes we become exhausted trying to do what only Christ can accomplish through us. We confuse spiritual activity with spiritual dependence. We can attend church, read our Bibles, and serve faithfully while still relying primarily upon ourselves. The question is not simply, “What am I doing for Jesus?” but “Am I allowing Jesus to accomplish His work through me?”

YOUR OLD SELF IS NO LONGER YOUR MASTER

When Paul declared, “I am crucified with Christ,” he was revealing a life-changing truth. Through our union with Jesus, we are identified with His death and resurrection. Romans 6:6 teaches that our old man was crucified with Him so that we should no longer serve sin. This does not mean temptation disappears or that Christians become incapable of sin. It means that sin no longer possesses the rightful authority to control our lives. We have been given a new identity and a new relationship with Christ. The enemy wants us to believe we will always be prisoners of our past, our weaknesses, and our failures. But God declares that we are no longer obligated to live under sin’s dominion. We do not overcome sin simply by fighting harder in our own strength. We experience victory as we reckon ourselves dead unto sin, yield ourselves to God, and walk in the power of His Spirit. Your past may explain some of your struggles, but it does not have the authority to determine your future in Christ.

DEPENDENCE IS THE SECRET TO DAILY VICTORY

Jesus said in John 15:5, “For without me ye can do nothing.” Those words reveal both our weakness and His sufficiency. Christ was not trying to discourage His disciples. He was teaching them where true spiritual strength originates. Consider how often we begin our days relying upon our own abilities. We face difficult people, unexpected problems, family responsibilities, and spiritual battles. We become frustrated because we are attempting to carry burdens in strength that was never sufficient for the task. But everything changes when we recognize that the Christ who lives within us is sufficient for whatever He calls us to face. When we lack patience, He can produce patience. When we struggle to forgive, He can enable us to forgive. When fear overwhelms us, He can strengthen our hearts with His peace. Our responsibility is to trust, surrender, obey, and remain dependent upon Him. Victory is not achieved by becoming independent and strong enough to live without Christ. Victory is experienced through continual dependence upon the Christ who lives within us.

Imagine a beautiful lamp sitting in a dark room. It may be expensive, perfectly designed, and equipped with the finest light bulb. Yet without electricity, it cannot produce a single ray of light. The lamp cannot make itself shine by trying harder. It must receive power from its source. In much the same way, Christians may possess knowledge, education, talent, and determination, but none of those qualities can replace the life of Christ working within them.         The difference is that Christ is not merely an outside power source. He lives within every believer, and through our daily dependence upon Him, His life becomes visible in ours.

STOP TRYING TO LIVE THE CHRISTIAN LIFE WITHOUT CHRIST

Perhaps the greatest spiritual breakthrough you will ever experience will come when you finally stop depending upon yourself and begin trusting the Christ who lives within you. God has not called you to manufacture holiness, produce spiritual fruit independently, or overcome every battle through human determination. He has called you to surrender to the One who has already provided everything necessary for godly living. Remember Paul’s testimony: “Nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me.” The Christian life is not you trying to become more like Jesus through your own strength. It is Jesus transforming you into His likeness as you surrender to Him. You are united with Christ. You are never spiritually self-sufficient, but you are never without His sufficient presence.

SPIRITUAL WARFARE PRAYER — CHRIST, LIVE YOUR LIFE THROUGH ME

Heavenly Father, thank You that I am united with Jesus Christ. Forgive me for the many times I have attempted to live the Christian life through my own strength, wisdom, and determination. In the name of Jesus, I reject the enemy’s lies that my past controls my future and that I must fight my spiritual battles alone. I surrender my thoughts, desires, attitudes, and decisions to Your Lordship. Holy Spirit, strengthen me to resist temptation, recognize deception, and walk in obedience. Lord Jesus, let Your love be expressed through my relationships, Your peace through my difficulties, and Your strength through my weaknesses. May others see less of my selfishness and more of Your character. Not my strength, but Yours. Not my will, but Yours. Not I, but Christ! In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.

DAILY CHALLENGE — PRACTICE THE EXCHANGED LIFE

Throughout today, whenever you encounter frustration, temptation, fear, or an overwhelming responsibility, pause before reacting and pray: “Lord Jesus, I surrender this moment to You. I cannot live the Christian life apart from You. I am trusting You to live Your life through me.” Tonight, reflect upon one situation in which you chose dependence upon Christ rathe  than self-reliance. Remember: The Christian life is not Christ helping you live your life. It is Christ living Hislife through you!
