THE POWER OF WORDS

Proverbs 18:21, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.”

In James 3:5-6, the Bible compares the tongue to a small fire that can set an entire forest ablaze.

Though the tongue is a small part of the body, it has the power to either bless or destroy.

Like fire, our words can spread rapidly, causing harm if not controlled, or warmth if used to comfort.

The illustration reminds us that words are powerful, and even a few careless ones can lead to significant consequences.

This comparison urges us to be mindful of the influence our speech has on those around us.

How often do we let words slip out without considering their impact?

Whether through anger, frustration, or simple thoughtlessness, our words can deeply wound or greatly heal.

Today, take a moment before speaking.

Will your words bring life, encouragement, and healing?

Choose to use your words to uplift, to speak truth in love, and to share kindness.

Recognize the responsibility you have to shape the atmosphere around you through the things you say.

Imagine a tube of toothpaste—once squeezed out, no matter how hard you try, you can’t put the toothpaste back in.

In the same way, once words are spoken, they can’t be undone.

Harsh words, gossip, or criticism can leave lasting scars, while words of encouragement and love can provide strength and comfort.

Let your words be thoughtful, reflecting love, wisdom, and grace, knowing their lasting impact.

PRAYER

Lord, guide my tongue today. Help me to speak words that bring life, encouragement, and peace. Guard my heart from harshness and teach me to be patient in my speech, so that my words may reflect Your love and truth. Let my words uplift and strengthen others, and bring honor to You. in Jesus Name, Amen.

ASSIGNMENT

Reflect on one person in your life who could use encouragement today.

Write down one positive, life-giving thing you can say to them.

Reach out to them with a phone call, text, or in person, and share your words of encouragement.

Make a habit of speaking life into the people around you daily.
