SERVING WITH A HUMBLE HEART

“And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant.”Matthew 20:27

True Greatness Comes Through Serving

The world often measures greatness by status, power, and recognition, but in God’s kingdom, greatness is defined by humility and service. Jesus made it clear that to be truly great, we must be willing to serve others. This is not a call to temporary acts of kindness but to a lifestyle of humility, compassion, and selflessness.

Serving others is not about being seen, praised, or rewarded—it is about reflecting Christ. True service happens when we put aside pride and self-interest and seek to bless others, whether or not anyone notices. When we embrace a humble heart, we follow the very example of Jesus, who lowered Himself to serve those who followed Him.

On the night of the Last Supper, Jesus, the Son of God, took on the role of a lowly servant and washed the feet of His disciples—a task typically performed by a household servant.

  1. Jesus Knew His Authority (John 13:3-5)

Jesus, knowing that all things had been placed under His power, chose to serve instead of seeking to be served. He removed His outer garment, took a towel, and began washing the feet of His disciples.

This act stunned the disciples—why would their Master lower Himself in such a way?

  1. Peter’s Resistance and Jesus’ Response (John 13:6-10)

Peter, confused by Jesus’ humility, at first refused to be served. But Jesus told him, “If I           wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.”

Peter then asked Jesus to wash not only his feet but his hands and head as well, showing a desire for full participation in Christ’s work.

  1. Jesus’ Call to Follow His Example (John 13:12-17)

After washing their feet, Jesus asked, “Know ye what I have done to you?” He explained that if He, their Lord and Master, humbled Himself to serve them, they should do the same for one another.

He declared, “If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.” True joy is found in serving others with a humble heart.

Jesus, who deserved to be exalted, chose to kneel. If the King of Kings could serve, then so must we.

A well-known CEO of a large corporation disguised himself as a janitor for a week to see how his employees were treated and to understand their daily struggles. As he scrubbed floors and emptied trash bins, he realized that true leadership is not about titles but about serving those around you.

At the end of the week, he revealed his identity and told his employees:
“Only when I humbled myself to serve did I truly understand what leadership meant.”

Likewise, true spiritual leadership begins with a willingness to serve, regardless of position or recognition.

Practical Application: Developing a Servant’s Heart

  • Serve in the Small Things – Look for ways to serve today, whether by helping a co-worker, assisting at home, or volunteering in church.
  • Put Others First – Make it a habit to consider the needs of others before your own, even in small decisions.
  • Follow Jesus’ Example – Ask, “How can I reflect Christ’s humility today?” True service is not about position but about obedience.

Prayer:  Lord, teach me to serve with humility. Help me to put others before myself and to reflect Your love through acts of kindness. Let my heart be like Yours—willing to serve, even when no one notices. May my life be a testimony of Your grace and selfless love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Serving with a humble heart is not about recognition—it is about reflecting Christ. Let us follow His example, choosing humility over pride, love over selfishness, and service over status.

Today, how will you serve like Jesus?
