Philippians 2:14, “Do all things without murmurings and disputings:”
Do all things without murmurings and reasonings.
To live a life inwardly applying the cross, do not rebel against God.
You say, “What do you mean, do not rebel? I am not rebelling.”
Every murmuring is a rebellion, and every reasoning is a rebellion.
Murmuring and reasoning are two words that describe how we rebel against God and against the cross.
Paul uses these words in the context of talking about the inward application of the cross.
In Philippians 2:6-8 the Lord Jesus is presented as the pattern of one who did not rebel against God.
He emptied Himself, He humbled Himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
Then Paul applies this pattern to the believers in verses 12-14: “Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure. Do all things without murmurings and disputings:”
This is the cross–to do all things without murmurings and without reasonings.
This is how to inwardly apply the cross.
Once I murmur or reason with the Lord’s environmental dealing with me, I nullify the cross inwardly.
This is why Paul gives us a most practical handle on how to apply the cross subjectively.
Simply do not murmur and do not reason, because these are the two things that manifest rebellion to God and to His arrangement.
