BUILDING UP IN LOVE

“From whom the whole body fitly joined together… maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.”  — Ephesians 4:16

The Greek word for “edifying” in Ephesians 4:16 is literally means “to build a house.” As each member contributes in love—whether through a kind word, a listening ear, or a helping hand—we are laying brick upon brick in the spiritual structure of Christ’s body. Love is our mortar; it not only cements relationships but releases divine power to strengthen and grow the church from within.

Barnabas, the “son of encouragement,” exemplifies this principle (Acts 4:36–37; 15:36–41). Though he never sought the spotlight, his quiet faith and willingness to invest in others bore lasting fruit—whether standing alongside Paul in persecution or restoring John Mark after failure. His ministry reminds us that God often uses the unnoticed, consistent encourager to build His kingdom.

One Sunday after service, I saw a young man lingering alone in the foyer. I simply sat with him, asked his name, and listened as he poured out doubts and disappointments. Over the next few months, he shared that that single conversation anchored him in faith during a dark season. That reminder—the power of presence—still moves me: your genuine care can be a lifeline to a struggling soul.

  • Speak Life: Today, intentionally affirm someone’s gift or testimony.
  • Listen Well: Give undivided attention—put away your phone, lean in, ask open questions.
  • Celebrate Wins: Publicly recognize small victories, from baptism decisions to answered prayers.
  • Serve Humbly: Ask your group leader or neighbor, “How can I help?”

As you perform these acts of encouragement, observe how God works in small moments to unify hearts. Trust that your simple gestures, empowered by the Holy Spirit, can ignite lasting growth in your church community.

  1. Who in your church family most needs a word of encouragement right now?
  2. When was the last time you truly listened without preparing your reply first?
  3. What talent or testimony can you celebrate or spotlight this week?

Daily Challenge: Choose one person—perhaps someone new or someone who’s been silent—and reach out with a note, a text, or a face‑to‑face conversation before the end of the week. Let love be the cement that holds you together.

Prayer: Jesus, teach me to build others up in Your love. Give me eyes to see the overlooked, words that bring life, and a heart that celebrates every part of Your body. May my presence reflect Your presence, and may my encouragement draw others closer to You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
