OCTOBER’S THEME — “SEEING HOLINESS FROM GOD’S PERSPECTIVE”
BEATS FROM YOUR PASTOR’S HEART
STOP TRYING TO PRODUCE WHAT CHRIST HAS PROMISED TO SUPPLY
“Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God.” — 2 Corinthians 3:5
GOD NEVER EXPECTED YOU TO BE YOUR OWN SOURCE
Many Christians spend years trying harder to become more patient, loving, forgiving, and faithful. When they fail, they become discouraged and promise to do better tomorrow. Yet tomorrow often brings the same struggles because they are still depending upon their own limited strength. The supplied life means that Jesus Christ, who lives within every believer, is the source of the spiritual strength, wisdom, love, and grace needed to live a life pleasing to God. The Christian life is not simply living for Christ. It is learning to live from Christ.
STOP TRYING TO PRODUCE WHAT ONLY GOD CAN SUPPLY
“For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.” — Philippians 2:13
God does not simply tell us how to live and then leave us to accomplish it alone. He supplies the grace necessary to obey Him. Think about an electric lamp. It was designed to give light, but it cannot produce light without electricity. No amount of polishing the lamp will make it shine without power. Likewise, we cannot produce genuine spiritual fruit through determination alone. Christ must be our source. Practical Application: When someone tests your patience, instead of simply trying harder to control your anger, pray, “Lord Jesus, I need Your patience. Help me respond with Your love rather than my frustration.” Then choose to obey H im. God is not asking you to become the source of His power. He is asking you to depend upon the power He supplies.
YOUR WEAKNESS IS AN INVITATION TO DEPEND UPON CHRIST
“My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.” — 2 Corinthians 12:9
We often believe our weakness makes us less useful to God. But Paul discovered that acknowledging his weakness allowed him to depend more completely upon Christ. Sometimes God allows us to reach the end of our strength so that we will recognize the sufficiency of His. Practical Application: When responsibilities become overwhelming, stop trying to solve everything at once. Pray, “Lord, I cannot handle all of this in my own strength. Give me the grace I need for the next step.” Then faithfully do what you can, trusting God with what you cannot control. Your weakness does not exhaust God’s resources. His strength is greater than your limitations.
THE SUPPLIED LIFE IS EXPERIENCED THROUGH DAILY ABIDING
“Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.” — John 15:4
A branch does not struggle to manufacture fruit. It receives life from the vine, and fruit develops because of that connection. Jesus teaches us that spiritual fruit comes through our dependence upon Him. Abiding means maintaining a conscious relationship of trust, surrender, and obedience throughout the day. We depend upon Christ not only during prayer but also while working, making decisions, facing difficulties, and dealing with people. Practical Application: When worry comes, turn to Christ for peace. When irritation rises, ask for His patience. When discouragement threatens, remember His faithfulness. The goal is not to become so strong that you no longer need Jesus. It is to become so dependent upon Him that turning to Him becomes your natural response.
Imagine a man carrying an empty bucket to a well. The bucket cannot produce water, regardless of how much he polishes or improves it. It was designed to receive water from the well.
Likewise, we were never designed to manufacture the Christian life through our own efforts. We were created to receive our spiritual strength from Christ. The secret of the supplied life is not improving ourselves until we become the source. It is continually depending upon the One who is our source.
CHRIST IS YOUR SUFFICIENCY
Jesus declared in John 15:5, “For without me ye can do nothing.”
This is not meant to discourage us but to free us from the exhausting burden of self-sufficiency.
Galatians 2:20 declares, “Nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me.”
This is the exchanged life: surrendering self-reliance and depending upon the indwelling Christ to supply the strength for our obedience. God is not trying to make you independent of Christ. He is teaching you how completely dependent upon Christ you already are.
WARFARE PRAYER — LORD, BE MY SUFFICIENCY
Heavenly Father, in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, forgive me for attempting to live the Christian life through my own strength. Deliver me from the pride of self-reliance and the discouragement that comes when my strength fails. I reject every lie of the enemy that tells me I am inadequate or useless because I am weak. Your Word declares that my sufficiency is of God. Lord Jesus, teach me to experience the exchanged life. Replace my impatience with Your patience, my fear with faith, and my striving with dependence upon You. Help me recognize that I am not my source—You are. May Your life be expressed through me today. In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.
DAILY CHALLENGE — PRACTICE DEPENDENCE
Before facing your next difficult responsibility, pause and pray, “Lord Jesus, I cannot produce what only You can supply. I choose to depend upon Your strength rather than my own.”Then take the next step in obedience, trusting Him for the grace you need.
