THE BURDEN OF REGRET

Proverbs 27:1, “Boast not thyself of to morrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.”

Proverbs 27:1 gives a sobering reminder that we are not guaranteed tomorrow.

So often, we plan for the future with the assumption that there will always be more time.

We put off important conversations, delay our decisions, and assume we’ll get another opportunity to act.

But this scripture makes it clear: we don’t know what tomorrow holds.

Tomorrow may never come.

In the Bible, we see examples of people who, like us, thought they had more time.

Consider the story of the rich man and Lazarus in Luke 16:19-31.

The rich man, living in luxury, had ample opportunities to help Lazarus, the poor man at his gate.

Yet he never acted on it.

After their deaths, the rich man, in torment, looked back on his life with deep regret.

He begged for a second chance—if not for himself, at least to warn his family.

But his opportunity had passed, and the burden of his inaction was unbearable.

Similarly, Proverbs 27:1 warns us not to rely on a future that may never come.

How often do we put off sharing Jesus with loved ones, thinking we have plenty of time?

But time slips away, and so do our chances to make an eternal impact.

The burden of regret weighs heavy when we realize we missed the moment to speak up, to love, to act.

Have you ever felt the weight of regret?

Maybe you look back on a moment when you had the chance to reach out to someone, but you hesitated.

Perhaps it was a conversation with a family member or friend, a heartfelt apology, or an opportunity to share the hope of Jesus.

But instead of acting, you let the moment pass, assuming you’d have another chance.

That regret can be paralyzing, leaving us with a heavy heart, wondering “What if?”

But the message today is one of grace and redemption: It’s not too late to make things right—today is the day to act.

The burden of regret doesn’t have to define us.

God, in His mercy, gives us today, this moment, to do the things we’ve been putting off.

Don’t let fear, procrastination, or busyness rob you of the opportunity to make a difference.

The call to share the gospel, to make amends, or to reach out with love is urgent.

You have this moment—use it wisely.

Imagine a letter you always meant to write but never did.

Perhaps it was a letter to a friend or a loved one.

You told yourself you’d write it tomorrow, but tomorrow came and went, and the letter remained unwritten.

Then, one day, you receive the devastating news that the person it was meant for is no longer around.

The realization sinks in: you missed your chance.

The burden of that regret is hard to carry.

You think about the words you never said, the love you never expressed, and the opportunity that is now lost forever.

That’s what happens when we put off sharing the hope of Jesus.

We think we have more time, but time slips away, and the people we care about may leave this life without ever hearing the message of salvation.

Let that image stir your heart to action.

There are letters unwritten, conversations unspoken, and lives unchanged because we waited.

Don’t let the burden of regret weigh you down any longer.

Act today.

PRAYER

Lord, we confess that too often we delay in doing the things that matter most. We put off important conversations, assuming we have more time, only to find that time is fleeting. Take away the burden of regret that weighs on our hearts, and give us the courage to act in faith today. Help us to be bold in sharing Your love, to reconcile broken relationships, and to be vessels of Your grace. Let us not wait for tomorrow when You have given us this moment to make a difference. In Jesus Name, Amen.

ASSIGNMENT

Take time today to reflect on areas of your life where you’ve put off important conversations or actions.

Is there someone you’ve been meaning to talk to?

Someone who needs to hear the message of hope in Christ?

Make a plan to address at least one of these areas today.

Whether it’s writing that letter, having a heartfelt conversation, or sharing the gospel with someone you’ve been praying for—don’t delay.

Today is your opportunity.
