Beats From Your Pastor’s Heart
COMING IN HUMILITY
Before you step into the sanctuary today, pause. Close your eyes, inhale slowly, and feel the weight of the world lift as you breathe out. Invite the Holy Spirit to shine a light on your heart—are you clutching a checklist of spiritual goals, or are you coming with a soft, curious spirit ready to learn? Release your tight grasp on ambition; loosen the grip of personal plans and lay every hidden motive at the foot of the cross. Let your entrance be marked not by self-interest, but by a humble surrender to God’s teaching.
“Let nothing be done through strife or vain glory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.” —Philippians 2:3
- Have you found yourself mentally tallying up what you’ll gain—an uplifting message, a friendly face, a moment of peace—instead of opening your heart with, “How can I bring honor to Jesus today?”
- Listen for the subtle, prideful whispers: “I’ve already heard this before,” or “No one else can handle that issue like I can.” Name those thoughts, then invite the Spirit to expose and uproot each one.
- As you enter, imagine your heart as a living room. What furniture of pride needs removing? What space can you clear so Christ and neighbor both have room to dwell?
- Finally, take a moment to pray silently: “Lord, strip away my ego. Replace my agenda with Your purpose. Teach me to value others above myself.” Then step forward, ready to worship and serve in genuine humility.
Prayer: Father, I confess my silent pride and hidden agendas. Strip away every lofty thought, and give me a lowly heart that esteems others above myself. Teach me to draw near in humility and to worship You in spirit and in truth. Amen.
Challenge: As Bill and the choir lead us in song, scan the row beside you. Is there someone you’ve overlooked? After praise, reach out—send a quick text of gratitude or whisper a word of encouragement. Let humility flow through simple acts of kindness today.
