PRESSING ON TOWARD THE GOAL

“I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” —Philippians 3:14

The Apostle Paul’s words in Philippians 3:14 serve as a powerful reminder that the Christian journey is one of continual forward movement. Paul emphasizes the importance of keeping our eyes fixed on Christ, striving towards the ultimate prize of knowing Him deeply and becoming more like Him each day. This pursuit is not about achieving perfection overnight but about making consistent, faith-filled progress in our spiritual walk. It’s about setting our hearts on the high calling that God has placed on our lives and diligently working towards it, step by step.

The writer of Hebrews offers a compelling parallel in Hebrews 12:1, encouraging believers to “run with patience the race that is set before us.” This vivid imagery of running a race highlights the need for endurance, perseverance, and a steady focus on Jesus as our ultimate goal. Just as an athlete trains diligently, maintains discipline, and keeps their eyes on the finish line, we too are called to maintain our focus on Christ, enduring through trials and setbacks with patience and unwavering determination.

  1. Examine Areas of Complacency: Reflect on your spiritual journey and identify areas where you may have become complacent. Perhaps there are aspects of your walk with God that have grown stagnant or goals you set at the beginning of the year that you’ve yet to pursue. Recognizing these areas is the first step towards renewal.
  2. Set a New Spiritual Goal: Commit to a new spiritual goal that will propel you forward in your faith. This could involve setting aside time to read through an entire book of the Bible, deepening your prayer life by adding dedicated prayer times, or engaging more actively in church activities and community service.
  3. Surround Yourself with Encouragement: Build relationships with fellow believers who can encourage your progress and hold you accountable. Being part of a supportive community provides the motivation and support needed to keep pressing on, especially during challenging times.

Consider the dedication of an athlete training for a marathon. An athlete doesn’t quit when fatigue sets in or discomfort arises; instead, they push through, keeping their eyes on the finish line and their goal. Similarly, our spiritual journey requires us to persevere through trials and setbacks, fueled by the hope and promises we have in Christ. Just as an athlete’s determination leads them to complete the race, our steadfast commitment to pressing toward our spiritual goals leads us to the high calling that God has prepared for us.

Prayer – Heavenly Father, Thank You for calling me to run this race of faith. Strengthen me to keep pressing on, even when the journey is tough and I feel weary. Remind me of the eternal prize and the joy of knowing You more deeply. Help me to stay focused on Christ, trusting in Your promises and relying on Your strength. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

  1. Identify One “Spiritual Training” Goal: Choose a specific spiritual goal to focus on for the next week. For example, commit to spending an additional 15 minutes each day in Bible reading or dedicate extra time to prayer and meditation.
  2. Write It Down and Commit: Write down your chosen goal and make a commitment to pursue it diligently for the next week. Place this written goal somewhere visible as a constant reminder of your commitment.
  3. Ask for Perseverance: Pray for God’s help in maintaining your commitment. Ask Him to grant you the perseverance and discipline needed to achieve your spiritual training goal, trusting that He will guide and strengthen you every step of the way.

Pressing on toward the goal is a testament to our dedication and desire to grow in our faith. It’s about setting our sights on the high calling God has for us and taking intentional steps each day to move closer to that divine purpose. By examining areas of complacency, setting new spiritual goals, and surrounding ourselves with a supportive community, we cultivate a resilient and steadfast faith. Just as an athlete’s perseverance leads them to the finish line, our unwavering commitment to pressing forward in our spiritual journey brings us closer to the fullness of God’s promises and the ultimate prize of knowing Christ more deeply.

  1. Examine Your Walk: Where in your spiritual journey do you feel you’ve become complacent? What areas need renewed focus and commitment?
  2. Set a Goal: What is one new spiritual goal you can set for yourself this week to advance your faith?
  3. Seek Support: Who in your community can you reach out to for encouragement and accountability as you pursue your spiritual goal?

As you press on toward the goal, may God grant you the strength and perseverance to continue your race with joy and determination. Let your faith grow deeper and your relationship with Christ become more intimate. Trust that as you strive forward, God is faithfully guiding you, providing the support and encouragement you need to reach the high calling He has set before you. May your journey be marked by unwavering faith, profound growth, and the unshakable assurance that God is with you every step of the way.

By embracing the step of Pressing On Toward the Goal, you are committing to a purposeful and forward-moving faith journey. Let this dedication lead you to experience the richness of God’s promises and the fulfillment of His high calling in your life.
