SERVING WITH HUMILITY

“And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant.” — Matthew 20:27

Jesus, the Son of God, gave us the ultimate example of humility and service when He knelt to wash His disciples’ feet (John 13:1-17).

In the culture of His time, washing feet was a task reserved for the lowest-ranking servant in a household.

It was a dirty, unpleasant job, made necessary by the dusty roads and sandals of the day.

For Jesus, their Lord and Teacher, to take on this task was a profound act of humility.

By setting aside His position and serving His disciples in such a practical and intimate way, Jesus demonstrated that greatness in God’s kingdom is not about status or recognition but about serving others selflessly.

Through this act, Jesus wasn’t just teaching His disciples a lesson in humility; He was modeling a lifestyle.

He showed them that true leadership is rooted in love and service.

He didn’t perform this act grudgingly or out of obligation but willingly and with a heart full of love.

Jesus knew that His time on earth was drawing to a close, yet His focus remained on serving and teaching His followers.

His humility in this moment also pointed to the even greater act of service He would soon accomplish on the cross—laying down His life for the sins of the world.

By washing their feet, Jesus taught that no task is too small or beneath us if it’s done in love and for God’s glory.

His example challenges us to put aside pride, embrace humility, and serve others wholeheartedly, regardless of the size or nature of the task.

In a world that often prioritizes power, recognition, and self-promotion, Jesus flips the script.

He calls us to humble ourselves and serve others, not for personal gain but as an act of love and obedience to Him.

True greatness in God’s kingdom is found not in how many people serve us but in how we serve others.

Whether it’s a small act of kindness or a significant sacrifice, serving with humility is a powerful way to reflect Christ’s love and glorify Him.

Imagine a waiter at a restaurant who attentively serves each table with a smile, going out of their way to meet the needs of others.

They work hard, not for accolades but because it’s their role to serve.

In God’s kingdom, we are called to take on a similar role, serving joyfully and selflessly, putting the needs of others before our own.

Just as a good waiter enhances the dining experience, our humble service can enhance someone’s day and point them to the love of Jesus.

PRAYER:  Lord, give me a servant’s heart. Help me to set aside my pride and selfish desires and to look for ways to serve others with love and humility. May my actions reflect Your love and draw others closer to You. In Jesus Name, Amen.

ASSIGNMENT:  Today, make it a point to serve someone with humility. It could be as simple as doing a chore for a family member, offering encouragement to a friend, or helping a stranger in need. Do it not for recognition but as an act of love, knowing that when you serve others, you are serving Christ.
