Beats From Your Pastor’s Heart

1 Kings 19:9, “And he came thither unto a cave, and lodged there; and, behold, the word of the LORD came to him, and he said unto him, What doest thou here, Elijah?”

Sometimes the Lord’s voice comes in the form of a question, such as, What are you doing here? or, Where are you going?

For example, one day the prophet Elijah was sulking because Jezebel was seeking his life (1 Kings 19:2-4).

Yes, Elijah was truly a mighty man of God.

He had already caused fire from heaven to come down and consume an offering, thus exposing the falseness of the prophets of Baal and exonerating and vindicating the living God (1 Kings 18:19-39).

But when he heard the report that Jezebel wanted to kill him, he ran for his life.

Eventually, his flight ended with his hiding in a cave.

In 1 Kings 19:9-13 we read the details of Elijah’s encounter with the Lord’s voice: “And he came thither unto a cave, and lodged there; and, behold, the word of the LORD came to him, and he said unto him, What doest thou here, Elijah? And he said, I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hosts: for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away. And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD. And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake: And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice. And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah?”

This story illustrates how the Lord is in the still small voice.

In the original Hebrew language it means “a delicate whispering voice.”

The Lord was in that whisper.

God’s speaking was in that still small voice, and it was in the form of a question, “What are you doing here?”

Maybe you have found yourself in “a cave” at some time.

Perhaps you went to the cave of a place that is questionable, and while you were doing or watching defiling things on your screen, there arose a consciousness within you in the form of a question, “What are you doing here?”

You can be sure, that was God talking to you.

That is the way His voice speaks–right inside of you, within your own consciousness.

Until Tomorrow
